I am Shawn D. Monroe Sr. announcing my candidacy for Alderman of the 15th Ward, of which I have been a resident since 1990. Yes, I am one of Chicago’s very own, asking for the chance to serve as your Alderman of the 15th Ward. When given this opportunity, I will improve both commercial and residential aspects of our neighborhood

Presently, I am known locally and internationally as Coach Monroe of the Marquette Park Small Fry Team. I am a devoted husband to my wife, Bridgette, and a dedicated father to my two children, Shawn (25), and Shaneka (20). Currently, I am employed with the Chicago Police Department and assigned to the Chicago Lawn 8th District station and I have served the Englewood 7th District station diligently and compassionately for ten years. Before entering the Police Academy, I worked as a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Bus Operator starting in 1985. In 1995, I resigned that position to pursue my dream of becoming a Chicago Police Officer.

I chose to dedicate my life to protect the citizens of Chicago because I strongly believe in being an agent for positive change. My respect for Chicago’s citizens and my belief in our youth as the key to our future has led me to work with young people as a volunteer basketball coach at Marquette Park. My love for basketball and coaching influenced me to start my own franchise in 1993 called the “Marquette Park Small Fry” basketball club. Coaching these young stars allows me to use basketball to impart the importance of honesty, respect, and good sportsmanship—values that will promote positive attitudes, a sense of social responsibility, and productive life skills that will certainly carry over to our community. As Alderman of the 15th Ward, you can count on programs for young people that will develop their talents, connect them with strong role models, and prepare them to be compassionate and productive citizens.

In addition to my commitment to our young people, as Alderman, I will fight to secure funding from the city and state to develop more meaningful programs for all the citizens of our Ward. I will work to bring jobs and benefits to the Ward, negotiate a strong economic base that will foster a favorable co-existence between businesses and the people of our neighborhood. I will find solutions to end the vices that plague our streets. Gambling and garbage that litters our streets will be a thing of the past. Vacant buildings and lots will either be booming with business or will be brought down. Any action that must be taken to ensure the safety of our neighborhood and the health of our property values will be taken—no more looking the other way. No more living with the status quo. The 15th Ward has earned the rights and privileges afforded to the wealthiest Chicago neighborhoods. And as your Alderman, I believe that you deserve the very best in City services, including beautification, and I will see to it that the 15th Ward enjoys the fruits of your tax dollars.

As a citizen and homeowner in the 15th Ward, I will proactively review the affects of HB4050 to our Ward. This bill became effective September 1, 2006, and it states that anyone purchasing property within zip codes 60629, 60620 and many others in the surrounding areas, will have to receive credit counseling prior to their loan being funded and the title company releasing title. This will cause a delay in buying and selling property in our area and many others. Is this positive or negative? What will this mean to real estate agents in our community? What will this mean for loan officers and mortgage brokers in the area? What will this mean for property owners and or those that wish to invest in our community? I will keep you informed of how this affects each one of us and vigilantly safeguard our rights as property owners, taxpayers, and hardworking citizens of this city. As Alderman of the 15th Ward, I will also review how the new rules for CHAC - Section 8 recipients affect those living or wanting to live in our Ward. CHAC will not pay subsidized rent for individuals who wish to live in properties on a block that has three or more boarded up properties or vacant lots that are not fenced in. Unfortunately, too many blocks in our Ward fit this description. What will this do for those wanting to move or purchase property in this area? What will that mean for property owners that cannot be found or those that cannot afford to fence in the vacant lots? As Alderman, I will meet with the community to arrive at a consensus about what should and must be done and then I will work with every level of government, every level of industry, every level of social service to get help to those who need it, provide guidance to those who need it, so housing can be secured for those who need it.. The 15th Ward is an up-and-coming neighborhood and for those of us who have been here all along, we have to continue to stick together so that we can ensure our neighborhood’s rebirth. As your Alderman, I will not only work for this change in the neighborhood, I will make sure that change is not so quick or so expensive that it leaves some of us behind, especially our elderly, sick and shut-in, or young families
As a coach, I have learned many valuable lessons, but one key lesson that I have learned is teamwork is the key to having a winning team. Teamwork is the key for the citizens of the 15th Ward. We have a great team of people right here in our Ward. We no longer need to turn to people outside of our Ward to solve our problems. We, the citizens of the 15th Ward, who live, work, and play in our Ward must step up to the plate. I know there are team players on every block in our Ward. Living and working in this Ward allows me to see them and work beside them on a daily basis.

Moreover, let me, Coach Monroe, do what I do best. As your Alderman, I will put a winning team together by having an Effective Combination of people in the right places to have a Maximum Impact, so our Ward can be the very best. Together we can distinguish our Ward from others in the same condition by continuously building and growing. We will become a model for the rest of the city on how a Ward can rise from the ashes of oppression by building upon the strength of its own residents. Together we can imagine a fully functioning Ward. You deserve representation that wants to fight for you everyday, in a city that is all inclusive.

Indeed, an election is a decision making process whereby the people vote for a candidate to act as a representative in government protecting their interest. This election will give the people of the 15th Ward the right to select a candidate who will not only represent them and the needs of their community, but also actively participate in everyday life within the community. Get out and vote for me, Coach Shawn Monroe for 15th Ward Alderman. Your vote counts and will truly make all the difference in our Ward, the 15th Ward, and the greatest Ward in the City of Chicago there is.

I promise to work hard and represent you with dignity. I promise to demonstrate loyalty and respect for all the citizens of our Ward. I need you to start our teamwork today. Vote for me and together we will do the rest!

Your support and input are vital to us and is very much needed in out our quest to make the community in which you live a much better community. Feel Free to view the Contact Page to send us any comments, suggestions, and/or feedback .
